[ubuntu] Vim: Warning: Output is not to a terminal

When I try to ssh into my Ubuntu system, it connects OK but hangs with the following message: "Vim: Warning: Output is not to a terminal". Even localhost fails. This used to work just fine and I haven't changed anything except regular updates. What does this message mean? Why is vim being called...
