if I insert my earphones I get very very soft sound at full volume if the machine is already logged in.

if I log out and then back in the sound is normal in the earphones and if I pull them the speakers are normal.

if I then put the earphones back in the same thing unless I relogin.

machine is thinkpad x260 so there should be no driver issues.

any idea of what it is (I could probably chase it down but thought to ask here first)
