I have 8 Gb of ram and never even come close to using that amount.

Would a ram disk be a waste of time?

If this is to be believed, (Article is dated around 2011)

Ubuntu by default uses a half of physical memory (RAM) as ramdisk, and it is mounted onto /dev/shm

/dev/shm is not in my fstab.
